[Myanmar Special] Day 1 in Yangon
Because of my hostel’s central location, I started my first “real” day in Myanmar by a walking tour through Yangon.
Old houses from the colonial time
It’s hard to overlook Yangon’s many houses from the colonial time. There was a nice tour in my guidebook that routed along the old customs building or the City Hall.
The famous Sule Pagoda had also been on the route and because it was closely located to my hostel I started my tour from there.
Sri Shiva Krishna (Hindu Temple)
This temple wasn’t included within the route from my guide book but I think it’s a quite interesting place to visit.
Shwe Dagon Pagoda
The Shwe Dagon Pagoda is Yangon’s biggest and most famous pagoda. On my way through the same named street I discovered many beautiful houses which were very old and partly fallen into ruins.
There’s a saying that eight hairs of Buddha are in the pagoda making it a very important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. The place unfortunately had been under construction during my visit, but it anyway was totally worth it. From far away the pagoda seems to be super huge which comes from its location on a hill.
Kandawgyi lake and park
The Kandawgyi is just a few steps away from the Shwe Dagon Pagoda. The air within the park is much cleaner compared to the rest of Yangon and it really relaxing to sit next to the water.
I was quite astonished that it was that easy to discover Yangon on foot. Of course and as always there is a lot more see and Yangon is a lot bigger. But the main sightseeing spots are closely located to each other.
Soon, I gonna let you know what I did the following day.
Don’t Panic!
